City Food Safety High Achievers grade’s Cinnamon Lakeside with A+

Cinnamon City Hotels were well awarded at the City Food Safety High Achievers Awards Ceremony, with Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo scoring an ‘A+’ grade at the award ceremony held recently. The award was presented by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa who was the chief guest at event.



Chief Medical Officer of Colombo Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam in his speech stated that the public health department has made vast progress in many areas made possible, due to the work carried out by the laboratory facilities of the Colombo Municipal Council and hoteliers understanding the importance of the maintenance of hygiene. With Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo being amongst the Five Star Hotels that have introduced hygiene managers, he further announced that the hotel has contributed extremely well to improve food hygiene standards today.

The criteria for awarding such grading was based on the management’s commitment, continuous improvement of process development, infrastructure and working environment, cleanliness, food preparation, storage and display, personnel hygiene and use of clean water and raw materials amongst others. It can be stated that this grading is an acknowledgement of the continuous achievements of the hotel, as on 24 January 2013, the Institute of Food Safety trained 35 food handlers of Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo, on food safety aspects. After the successful completion of the exam and the program, all 35 food handlers were awarded with certificates and certified food handler ID cards.

The topics covered were food borne disease and prevention, food poisoning and prevention, personal hygiene and food legislation and pest control. The boards of facilitators included; Colombo City Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ruwan Wijemunim, Institute of Food Safety Director Keerthi Marasinghe, Chief Food and Drugs Inspector City of Colombo S.M. Kalhari Arachchi and City of Colombo Chief Public Health Inspector Dr. W.G. Karunathilake. The awards ceremony was headed by Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam.
