With the recent appointment of a new sub-distributor in Addu Attol, Elephant House Ice Creams further cemented its leadership position in Maldives where it has captured over 50% of the market.
Addu Atoll is the site of Addu city, the second most populated and one of only two cities in the Maldives.
“As part of our efforts to keep the growth momentum up, we continue to expand our distribution network in the Maldives. With a population of over 35,000 and high disposable income levels, Addu Attol provides an ideal target market for Elephant House ice creams,” Ceylon Cold Stores (Elephant House) Head of Frozen Confectionary and John Keells Holdings Vice President Neil Samarasinghe said. “We are confident that our new sub-distributor for the territory will bring in an additional 8,000 to 9,000 liters in sales.”
Samarasinghe added: “An increase in indirect consumption of our products, in the form of milkshakes and sherbets, coupled with prevailing high occupancy rates at the resorts have helped boost our sales further.”
Having entered Maldives in 2002, the brand was faced with a market dominated by internationally renowned brands. With Lily International (Pvt.) Ltd. as its sole distributor in the country, Elephant House ice creams surpassed competition by 2009. The Elephant House brand is currently being served in more than 59 resorts in the country, including the Sheraton Chain of resorts.
