Reuters: A vendor in India’s southern Chennai city attempted to create a world record by making 1,000 different types of idli, a popular breakfast dish rice cake in south India and Sri Lanka, on Sunday (15 March). People thronged at a school premises, venue of the event, to take a glimpse of an assortment of idlis which were on display. Children were amazed to see different shapes and sizes of idlis which included the Indian flag, cartoons, animals, number and others. “It is a big thing actually we have not seen many of these shapes but here when you come and see these kinds of shapes it gives more pleasure and flavour to eat more idlis for healthy diet,” said a visitor, Sudheer. Idli, a savoury cake, is a traditional breakfast in south Indian households. However, idli vendor, Iniyavan, created a twist by adding various flavours to it like almond, pista or pistachio, vegetables, chocolate and fruits. Iniyavan said he wanted to create awareness among people as idli is a steamed dish which is healthy. “As an idli vendor I wanted to be different from others so I thought why not we bring variety in Idli like pizza or burgers so I tried this. We planned for a month on what kind of shapes and flavors can be given,” said Iniyavan. Iniyavan along with team of 15 people worked for two days to prepare 1,000 varieties of idli. Last year, Iniyavan’s feat was recorded by the Limca Book of Records when he made a single idli that weighed about 124 kilograms.
