The Nawaloka has spiced up the heart of Colombo with the Launch of ‘Upali’s’, transforming the Cinnamon Gardens Residence of the Late ‘Nawaloka Mudalali’ into a restaurant with a difference. Harking back six decades to the beginning of the Nawaloka Group, when its founder, the Late Deshamanya H.K. Dharmadasa inaugurated the – now widely popular – ‘Nawaloka Hotalaaya’ in Peliyagoda, Upali’s will offer authentic Sri Lankan cuisine made using traditional methods of preparation. Located on Alexandra Place, overlooking the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Vihara Maha Devi Park and Town Hall, Upali’s will revive traditional recipes and serve speciality dishes from around Sri Lanka. Upali’s will follow in the same vein as the ‘Nawaloka Hotalaaya’ did and has consistently done, in providing quality dining and food combined with traditional, warm Sri Lankan hospitality – a trademark which the Late ‘Nawaloka Mudalali’ strived to maintain throughout the years, but of course in a contemporary setting with a more sophisticated and regal ambience. The new restaurant will feature spaces for dining, special rooms for business luncheons and dinners, a dedicated area for private parties and private rooms for group dining, complete with facilities for the Teppinyaki-style-preparation of traditional favourites like hoppers and kottu. The menu at Upali’s will be composed of authentic regulars and traditional delicacies passed down over generations, enjoyed around the country and even sought-after internationally. On the list of speciality dishes that will be served at Upali’s are the ‘Udarata Hathmaaluwa’ – a recipe that dates back 1,500 years, ‘Fish Head Curry’ and ‘Gam Kukulmas Curry’ prepared in traditional-manner, not forgetting the ‘mortar and pestle’, Northern favourites: ‘Jaffna Mutton Waruwal’ and ‘Jaffna Crab Curry’, dishes from the South including ‘Southern Batu Moju’ and ‘Matara Ambul Thiyal’, and many more traditional and non-traditional offerings. Upali’s will also serve ‘Kade Paan’ and ‘Rose Paan’ with a mouth-watering dish of your choice. In all, the Nawaloka Group plans to create a primely-situated, multi-purpose restaurant serving authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. What differentiates Upali’s from other restaurants will be its methods of preparation, where cooking will be done not just as a practice, but as a ritual adhering to ancient techniques of cooking, to create wholesome, healthy and spicy food from around the country. And in contrast to the original Nawaloka Hotel in Peliyagoda, it can all be enjoyed and savoured in an elegant and breath-taking ambience on Alexandra Place, in the centre of Colombo.
