By Sarah Hannan To quote William Ewart Gladstone: “If you are cold, tea will warm you; if you are too heated, it will cool you; If you are depressed, it will cheer you; If you are excited, it will calm you.” Well that sums up what tea does to you in a simpler way. Being brought up in the hill country, I had my fair share of tasting the best of teas and now miss that perfect cup of milk tea. However, I recently got to know that there is a new tea bar at Barnes Place which is ready to serve the perfect milk tea, personalised to one’s preference. In 1936 Thurson De Silva started off as a planter and was the first generation of the De Silva family who ventured in to the tea trade. Following the footsteps of his grandfather 64 years down the line the Lushantha De Silva went on to establish Empire Teas Ltd., which is currently the fourth largest tea exporter in Sri Lanka. Marketed over 30 countries around the globe Empire Teas has a wide variety of products which are not only limited to tea but also expands to various accessories used to brew and serve tea. Branching out in to the retail sector and giving an opportunity to the Sri Lankans to taste their export quality tea, the Lushantha De Silva along with the assistance of his son Sajeev De Silva recently opened up a tea bar under the name of Tea Avenue located at No. 55, Barnes Place, Colombo 7. With the establishment of this tea bar, the De Silva’s look forward to celebrate the history of a rich culture in tea, allowing their patrons to taste the best cup of tea. “The teas are personally selected by us to ensure that each cup of tea is brewed to perfection. We have mastered the perfect milk tea, which is personalised to your preference using fresh milk, powdered milk or condensed milk,” Tea Avenue Manager Operations Sajeev De Silva states. He believes that the cozy ambiance and the perfect milk tea sets them apart from other tea lounges that are in the country. Among the vast range of teas one can select regional teas, milk tea, black and green teas with natural infusions and iced teas. Tea Avenue also serves a range of coffees and chocolate based beverages, ensuring that no one feels left over. Most of these beverages are priced between Rs. 300 and Rs. 550. Apart from the hot and cold beverages Tea Avenue also offers you a variety of breakfast items and snacks to choose from; salads, soups, pastas, sandwiches, lasagna, waffles, pancakes and brownies. Food items are priced between Rs. 350 to Rs. 800. Tea Avenue opens for the public from Wednesday 8 October and the opening hours will be from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and on weekends it will remain open until 1 am.
