Chefs worldwide commemorate the day by passing on the legacy of passionate cooking
Aimed at bringing pride and honour to the profession, 20 October is celebrated across the globe as International Chefs Day. In addition, the celebration marks the opportunity to make a positive change within the chefs’ vocation, local communities and beyond honouring this year’s theme of ‘Pass it On’.
As Sri Lanka’s foremost baker and caterer with over a century of tradition behind them, P&S joined in the celebrations of International Chef’s Day for the first time in Sri Lanka; with a special event aimed at inspiring the country’s next generation. A special cooking demonstration was held at Motagedera Central College and St. Mary’s Convent, Matara; attended by over 500 students with a mix of girls and boys from each school. The event was carried out over a half-day, with the demonstration taking place at Motagedera Central College during the morning hours and at St. Mary’s Convent between 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
The event was conducted by Chef Dolage, one of the most renowned pastry chefs in Sri Lanka, with over 33 years of experience in the industry. Chef Dolage shared his experience with the students, teaching them to cook a modern classic; a pizza. What’s more, he taught them how to make a pizza not with sophisticated equipment, but on a simple pan on a freely available gas cooker. Thus allowing the students to learn a skill they can use at home.
Spreading the spirit of International Chef’s Day and giving back to the community, all students and staff to witness the demonstration received free vouchers courtesy P&S, as well as a Chocolate ‘Kimbula’ Bun and an Iced Coffee to taste their sweet tooth.
“To P&S, the simple sight of the smiles on the faces of the children who got to the opportunity to learn from one of the best chefs in the country, was rewarding beyond words, ensuring that this celebration of International Chef’s Day will be the first of many in the future,” commented, Perera and Sons.
