Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka is delighted to announce that Nonky Tejapermana and Marc Schröer have joined the team as the resort’s new Executive Chef and Director of Food & Beverages, respectively. With a wealth of luxury hospitality experience spanning over twenty years, the new female Executive Chef and dynamic director will bring a host of innovative ideas and culinary expertise to Sri Lanka’s newest luxury opening.
Continuing a career which began at Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts’ Jakarta outpost, Tejapermana returned to the group in October 2016 at Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka, having honed her skills with 13 years of culinary experience on land, sea and in the air. Her time at the helm of numerous Michelin-starred properties in the UK, as well as eight Luke Mangan concept restaurants in both Australia and a five-star Maldivian resort, lends a distinctly European approach to her native Indo-Japanese flavours.
Schröer has worked for several prestigious companies across the globe, including the Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, where he held the position of Food and Beverage Director. Schröer has travelled extensively across Europe and South Asia and brings with him an eclectic mix of influences to the culinary offering at Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa.
A selection of four restaurants and bars allow guests to experience an authentic culinary adventure. Among the offerings are Bojunhala, featuring authentic Sri Lankan specialties and international cuisine, or Sera for Hawker-style stalls offering flavourful specialities from Southeast Asia. Ulpatha (or ‘Watering Hole’) is home to one of the finest selection of malt whiskies in Sri Lanka, while Gimanhala prepares all day refreshments and cocktails by candlelight.
Set beside the Indian Ocean and framed by swaying king coconut trees, the resort, which opened on 1 June 2016, is located on Sri Lanka’s ancient Spice Route, along the island’s lush, unspoiled Southern coastline. With 145 acres of tropical gardens, there is ample space at this striking new property for guests to unwind within the spectacular surroundings, and make the most of the impressive facilities. Most notable include CHI Ayurveda Spa, three swimming pools, an 18-hole golf course, a unique Artisan Village celebrating local arts and crafts and an array of al fresco dining options. The island nation boasts a colourful heritage, and its southern coast caters to leisurely exploration with historic temples, quaint fishing villages and secluded beaches. Shangri-La’s Hambantota is in close proximity to some of the country’s finest nature and wildlife reserves, including Yala and Bundala National Parks.
