At Rs. 110,000 in support of Room To Read
Subway, the largest restaurant chain in the world, marked its inception in Sri Lanka with a series of fabulous events winning the hearts of food lovers who had waited eagerly for the restaurant’s arrival in the island. As dusk fell on 20 August 2014, the Subway Sri Lanka team, along with captains and leaders of Sri Lankan industries descended upon the Taj Samudara for the official VIP brand launch and charity auction for Subway in Sri Lanka. The evening was dedicated to showcase the values and strength of the brand.
Graced by many distinguished guests, a festive air held all in rapture as the Subway story was on showcase, after which, guests proceeded to savour the goodies on offer while a line up of exciting activities, organised by the dedicated team at Subway, kept them entertained throughout the night.
Subway Co-Founder Fred DeLuca delivered a special message through a video conveying his enthusiasm about opening a Subway in Sri Lanka and expressing his desire to visit the island. Further, one of the most significant items on the agenda was the ‘auctioning’ of a ‘3-foot-sub’ to raise funds for the Room To Read Organisation. This special sub was auctioned at a whopping price of Rs. 110,000 to Errol Weerasinghe, Chairman of CAHM and to Ataraxia Capital Partners. In operation since 2005 in Sri Lanka, Room to Read is a non-governmental organisation from the USA with a global presence and the aim of the organisation is to provide access to education for children.
Commenting on the auction of the ‘sub’ Nathan Wills, Franchise-Owner and Chairman, Subway Development Ltd. Sri Lanka said, “Subway has always strived to be a good corporate citizen and to give back to the communities in which we operate in.”
Initiated in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and his friend and partner Dr Peter Buck, Subway is recognised world over for its gourmet breads and delicious meals. With a view to expand its network island-wide, Subway opened their doors with much fan fare and will continue to spread joy among food lovers.
