116 security officers of Ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa withdrawn

At least 116 VIP protection police officers assigned to the security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa have officially ended their duties as of yesterday. This follows the Government’s decision to withdraw additional security provided to former presidents.

Before their departure, the officers visited Rajapaksa’s official residence on Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo, where they engaged in a cordial conversation with him and posed for a group photograph.

Expressing gratitude to his security team, Rajapaksa shared a heartfelt message on X.

“For years, you have stood by me like a shadow, protecting my life and the lives of my family members. Your sacrifices, loyalty, and service have meant more than words can ever express. I extend my heartfelt gratitude and deepest respect to all of you.”

The move to withdraw the additional security is part of broader reforms affecting the privileges of former officeholders.
