Whilst the Police may have expeditiously nabbed the suspect of the murder of former journalist Mel Gunasekera, the family had a bitter ordeal in seeking the assistance from 119 on the day of the crime. Sources close to the family said the Gunasekeras had been calling Emergency hotline 119 ceaselessly for 45 minutes without a response. The helpless family eventually managed to get through to the IGP via a VVIP. “Emergency is for emergency and what’s the point of having it if it’s dead when you’re in an emergency? Common people have no recourse to VIPs to get Police attention and the public deserve a swifter response from 119,” a source said, adding the lack of response from 119 was a common complaint. Family, friends and the media community bid farewell yesterday at General Cemetery, Kanatte, to the senior business journalist who was Assistant Vice President of Fitch Ratings Lanka at the time of her death.
