Eighteen persons tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 1,548, as the Navy and repatriated Sri Lankan clusters continued to grow, though at a slower pace than seen earlier this week.

Of the 18 patients confirmed, seven were Navy personnel and 11 were recently repatriated Sri Lankans.

Nine infected patients recovered yesterday, pushing the number to recover and be discharged to 754. According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, 776 patients remain in care and 75 suspected cases are being monitored by health authorities. Of the 784 patients, the highest number 137 are being treated at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID).

Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 patient recovery rate has dropped to 48.96% from 56% last week. However, Sri Lanka still leads the world average rate of 43.91%, the Health Promotion Bureau said on their website.

337 Sri Lankans who were repatriated from 22 April to date have tested positive for COVID-19. 10 patients have succumbed to the virus.

A group of 15 persons who completed the quarantine program at two quarantine centres were released after being subjected to PCR tests, the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPC) said. A total of 11,056 persons have completed quarantine at centres run by armed forces. 5,154 remain in quarantine at 44 centres islandwide.

A total of 366 infected sailors have recovered and been moved in to post-treatment quarantine after being subjected to the COVID-19 PCR tests, the NOCPC added. 342 sailors remain under care, a majority of them at the Naval Hospital in Welisara.

The Sri Lankan Government is planning to begin PCR testing for COVID-19 at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Civil Aviation sources told the Daily FT.
