1H tea crop up 25% despite 5% dip in June

Tea production in the first half of this year has grown by 31 million kilos or 24% to 161.49 million, Forbes and Walker said.

Quoting Sri Lanka Tea Board data, Forbes said all elevations had shown substantial gains, with the low growns in particular gaining 27% over the corresponding period of 2020.

Low grown crop grew by 21 million kilos to 97 million kilos. High and medium growns crop improved by 4.9 and 4.6 5 million kilos respectively or 16% and 20% over the first half of 2020.

Cumulative production of CTC teas (January-June 2021) totalled 14.04 million, recording a 2.28 million kilo increase vis-à-vis 11.76 million kilos of January-June 2020. Here again, all elevations have shown a significant gain YOY when compared to the corresponding period of 2020

In June tea crop totalled 25.94 million down by 1.42 million kilos or 5% from a year earlier.

High and medium elevations have shown a decline, whilst the low growns recorded a marginal gain over the corresponding month of 2020, Forbes and Walker said.
