A group of 22 Israeli nationals yesterday departed from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, after security warnings were issued regarding potential terrorist threats in Arugam Bay.
The first warning was issued by the US Embassy in Colombo, followed by the Israel National Security Council, advising their citizens to Arugam Bay or leave Sri Lanka due to credible intelligence of a possible attack targeting tourists.
The Israeli nationals were safely escorted to the BIA and boarded Fly Dubai flight FZ 570, which departed for Dubai at 3:03 a.m.
Since there are no direct flights from Colombo to Israel, the group will continue their journey to Tel Aviv or Jerusalem from Dubai.
This evacuation follows a series of heightened security measures across the country after multiple embassies, including those of the US, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Israel issued travel warnings, advising caution in areas like Arugam Bay, which has seen an influx of Israeli tourists in recent months due to its popularity as a surfing hotspot.
Authorities yesterday revealed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the security threats to Israeli nationals.
