Under the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) is making arrangements to set up 40 new Nenasala rural telecentres in the Northern Province.
“The first 20 of these new Nenasalas (wisdom outlets) will be inaugurated within two weeks,” said ICTA Chairman, Presidential Advisor and Peradeniya University Chancellor Professor P.W. Epasinghe.
Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Ranjith Siyamabalapitiya is scheduled to declare open the 20 centres in the Northern Province on 16 and 17 September.
The ICTA Chairman said that the aim of setting up these Nenasalas is to accelerate the equipping of the people with knowledge about information technology as well as providing them with IT facilities. This coincides aptly with the economic development taking place in the North with the dawn peace in the country.
The facilities provided at the Nenasalas include facilities to use Skype and e-services. Computer courses suitable for youths and school children are also scheduled to be launched.
The ICTA says that once the 40 new Nenasalas are in place, the total number of Nenasalas in the Northern Province will be 58. This will comprise Nenasalas in the Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya Districts.
The whole Nenasala project is a concept of the President as the country’s flagship project for making the maximum benefits of ICT reach all, especially the remotest villages.
Currently there are 699 Nenasalas island-wide.
