Peoples Struggle Alliance (PSA) has officially named PSA member Attorney-at-Law Nuwan Bopage as the party’s candidate in the upcoming Presidential Election.

The announcement was made in Colombo yesterday, by fellow JAS activist Lahiru Weerasekara. The PSA is made up of activists and civil society groups that participated in the 2022 citizens’ struggle in the country.

“Bopage, who strengthened the citizens’ struggle both personally and professionally amid the complex political scenario in the country to further the citizens’ aims, will contest in the upcoming Presidential election,” Weerasekara announced.

Bopage is a human rights lawyer who was prominently involved in addressing violations of fundamental rights during the 2022 citizens’ struggle.

He is named the 59th accused in the case filed for illegally entering the President’s House in Colombo at the time.

Bopage has also repeatedly represented former Inter University Student’s Federation (IUSF) Convenor Wasantha Mudalige and Galwewa Siridhamma Thero, both of whom were detained under the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Bopage also addressed the 51st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in September 2022 where he briefed the international community on the alleged repressive acts carried out by the Government against the IUSF.
