The family of the late Minister M.H.M. Ashraff has disassociated itself from President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s proposal to construct a memorial museum in the late politician’s honour in Kalmunai, at an estimated cost of Rs. 25 million.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) son of the late Minister, Aman Ashraff said neither he nor his mother former Minister Ferial Ashraff are associated with the project.
Commenting on the Government’s proposal, Aman expressed that if his father were alive, he would instead advocate for the improvement of educational standards, addressing issues in agriculture and fisheries, providing access to expertise, and creating career opportunities in new markets for the youth of Digamadulla.
In response to remarks by certain X users, Aman went as far as to describe the plan as ‘ridiculous’. His outspokenness on the matter also earned commendations from numerous X users.
It was reported on Wednesday that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the construction of the “Ashraff Memorial Museum” based on a request by the community led by Digamadulla District MP H.M.M. Haris.
President Wickremesinghe is said to have earmarked Rs. 25 million for the project and directed officials to initiate construction without delay.
