In a proactive move to address the operational and welfare issues at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Aviation Minister Vijitha Herath conducted an onsite visit on Sunday (10).

Joined by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. Chairman Harsha D. Abeywickrema, Vice President Cyril Vannigama, and other senior airport officials, the Minister engaged directly with employees from various departments to understand their challenges and gather input for immediate improvements.

One key issue addressed during the visit was a proposal to reclaim a Rs. 50,000 bonus paid to airport employees in 2023. Deeming this proposal unethical, Minister Herath announced its cancellation, signalling his commitment to fair treatment of the workforce.

To improve passenger communication, especially concerning flight delays, the Minister directed airport management to establish a 24-hour communication unit. This dedicated team will inform passengers promptly about flight delays, enhancing transparency and improving passenger experience at BIA.

Recognising concerns among recently recruited security personnel, who have been issued only one uniform, Herath ordered that they be provided with three uniforms each to ensure adequate work attire and maintain professionalism.
