Higher Education and Highways Minister Kabir Hashim said the BMW car, which ended up in a canal at Thalawathugoda in Battaramulla early Saturday morning after crashing into two other cars, was driven by one of his relatives.
Issuing a statement, the Minister said he noted the media reports on the crash published on some websites and one of the vehicles which was involved in the crash was driven by his relative.
However, the Minister stressed that his relative was not a member of his staff nor was he in any way involved in his political affairs.
According to media reports, the BMW, leaving a nearby night club at around 6.00 a.m. on Saturday, crashed into two vehicles before plunging into the canal. The two people in the BMW had fled the scene in a three-wheeler.
However, there were no reported casualties and the owners of the other two cars have reported the incident to the police.
Thalangama Police have commenced investigations into the incident. Minister Hashim further emphasised that he would offer his full support to the police in their investigations.
