Basil Rajapaksa will take oaths as a Member of Parliament (MP) tomorrow.

He will fill the seat vacated by SLPP National List MP Jayantha Katagoda, who resigned from his parliamentary seat yesterday.

Katagoda handed over his resignation to Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Dasanayake last morning, following which the SG informed the Chairman of the Election Commission of the vacancy.

The Election Commission will meet today, following which the gazette notification confirming Rajapaksa’s appointment to fill the vacancy will be issued.

Rajapaksa is to be sworn in as a minister before he takes oaths tomorrow, the Daily FT learns.

Basil is tipped to be appointed Minister of Finance and Economic Development with the former subject being taken from Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. He is also likely to be appointed in charge of Home Affairs.

Katagoda during an electronic media interview yesterday said Basil will be the Finance Minister.
