Seasoned political campaigner Basil Rajapaksa will have a busy and momentous day today as he re-enters Parliament with a Cabinet Ministerial portfolio.
Daily FT learns Basil will be first sworn in as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat today morning after which the former will go to Parliament where he will take oath as a National List MP before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana. Basil is also scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at his Chambers in Parliament.
Basil is also scheduled to get straight down to work and will assume duties at the Finance Ministry later in the day.
The Government MPs believe the formal entry of Basil and Ministerial duties will help revive the COVID-impacted economy faster, whilst the private sector and investor community too are upbeat as the move will boost business confidence.
