  • States open to boundary wall removal at Rathmalana Airport provided State security conduct comprehensive threat assessment to address potential risks
  • Notes details were shared with Civil Aviation Minister upon site visit and thorough technical study by experts

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) yesterday issued a statement setting record straight over concerns raised by aviation community regarding the boundary wall at Colombo International Airport in Ratmalana.

The regulator confirmed that the boundary wall at the Galle Road end of Ratmalana Airport complies with the required standards for Obstacle Limitation Surfaces.

However, the regulatory body acknowledged the concerns raised by the aviation community and expressed its willingness to consider the wall’s removal subject to specific conditions.

CAASL added all required safety areas at the runway’s Galle Road end have been established beyond the recommended limits.

Despite this, the authority stated it has no objection to removing the boundary wall at Rathmalana Airport, provided that State security authorities conduct a comprehensive threat assessment to address potential risks.

“If the boundary wall is removed, it will be mandatory to establish a perimeter fence made of frangible material that adheres to the prescribed safety standards.

Public safety along Galle Road during aircraft movements must be prioritised before the removal of the boundary wall and the installation of a frangible fence,” the statement read.

Given the significant vehicular traffic on Galle Road, CAASL noted an aircraft overrun or undershoot could lead to catastrophic consequences, posing serious risks to road users, public transport passengers and residents living opposite the airport.

The CAASL stated it has informed the above facts to the Civil Aviation Minister upon a site visit and comprehensive technical study conducted by a committee of technical experts.

“The CAASL remains fully committed to ensuring the safety of flight operations and the general public while addressing the concerns of stakeholders at Ratmalana Airport,” the statement added.
