CBSL economic lessons to MPs ahead of Budget

Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe on 30 August will conduct a two-hour special session on “Sri Lanka’s current economic situation and way forward” to all Members of Parliament.

Organised as per the instructions of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, the interactive discussion is scheduled for 2.00 p.m. at the Committee Room No. 1 of the Parliament.

Parliament Acting Secretary General Kushani Rohanadheera has informed all MPs to participate in the special program. She has further informed that this dialogic discourse has been organised with the aim of providing an opportunity for effective discourse on the current economic situation and future economic direction of the country, so that it will be useful for the MPs to actively participate in the upcoming parliamentary debates regarding fiscal matters.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Economic Stability and National Policies is to present the inauguration speech of the second reading of the Appropriation (Amendment) Bill on 30 August.

The debate on the second reading of the Appropriation (Amendment) Bill will be held on 31 August and 1 September  from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. without lunch break.

On 2 September from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. the second reading of the Appropriation (Amendment) Bill will be debated, following which the Bill is scheduled to be passed after the Committee stage and the third reading.

Three Regulations under the Foreign Exchange Act, a resolution under the Customs Ordinance and Orders under the Special Commodity Levy Act are also scheduled to be approved in Parliament on the same day.
