In a significant stride towards enhancing power infrastructure, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced that the Polpitiya-Hambantota 220 kV transmission line has been successfully integrated into the national grid.

The completion of preliminary work marked the activation of the transmission line, bringing increased power reliability and transfer capabilities to the southern region.

Additionally, on Thursday (24), the newly established grid substation in Hambantota was energised.

This milestone achievement represents a collaborative effort between the CEB and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which funded the project with a substantial investment of $ 55 million. Spanning a distance of 150 kilometres, the Polpitiya-Hambantota transmission line traverses 11 Divisional Secretariats, extending from Ambagamuwa to Hambantota. The CEB noted that the transmission line boasts an impressive capacity, underpinning its potential to accommodate increased power demand and facilitate efficient power flow.

The new grid substation in Hambantota is a key element of this project. Boasting the completion of two power transformers with a collective capacity of 500 MVA, the substation is poised to play a pivotal role in the power distribution network. The CEB said the upgrade signifies a considerable augmentation of the region’s power supply infrastructure.
