The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday announced that due to the ongoing inclement weather, there may be intermittent power suspensions in certain areas to ensure public safety.

These measures are deemed necessary to avoid risking valuable lives during the adverse weather conditions.

The CEB assured that its staff would make every effort to restore power at the earliest possible instance to minimise inconvenience to the public. “The critical breakdowns and life threatening situations will be given priority,” a notice issued by the CEB noted.

In light of these circumstances, the CEB called on the public to refrain from making unnecessary calls to its call centres.

“The public are urged not to make unnecessary calls to the Call Centres of CEB to reserve the facilities for important life saving and critical breakdown complaints. Your cooperation and understanding are highly valuable for CEB to optimally use its resources at this time of calamity,” the statement added.

As of 1 June, the CEB also said that due to inclement weather, CEB has registered over 8,700 electricity breakdown complaints, resulting in power outages for over 16,600 consumers during the past two days.

“Over 3,900 breakdowns have been cleared and power supply has been restored for about 9,700 consumers as of 5 p.m. on 1 June,” the statement added.
