The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday recorded a statement from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa in relation to a financial transaction complaint. The inquiry, which lasted more than two hours, was initiated by the CID following a complaint by a Malaysian businessman.
Rajapaksa arrived at the CID headquarters at 9:00 a.m., accompanied by his legal team.
Speaking to the media before heading in for questioning, Rajapaksa expressed uncertainty over the nature of the summons. “I don’t know the matter. It’s better to be called in. The only way to get rid of the accusations against us is to come here. Because some lie with conviction. We are not those who lie with conviction. We will go and give our statement with conviction and come,” he stated.
According to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa, the investigation is tied to a financial transaction that allegedly took place between 2010 and 2015, during which funds had been received by Rajapaksa. The complaint was filed by the Malaysian businessman and is currently under investigation by the CID.
After giving his statement, Rajapaksa told reporters that the complaint was anonymous and urged the Government not to politicise the investigation process. “It is usually the practice to question former MPs after an election,” he remarked.
