CID takes over investigations of Dinesh Schaffter murder case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday took over the investigations into the shocking death of investor and highly qualified corporate executive Dinesh Schaffter on Thursday, following what is alleged as a brutal and mysterious murder. 

The 51-year-old was found unconscious and tied inside his vehicle at the General Cemetery in Borella on Thursday evening and was rushed to the ICU of the National Hospital in Colombo. He was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.

The CID is probing the murder, Sri Lanka Police said in a statement. Dinesh was a Non-Executive Director of family-controlled Janashakthi Insurance PLC.

Issuing a public statement, the Schaffter family requested to respect the privacy and sorrow of the family and await the finalisation of investigation by authorities.

A shocked and aggrieved Schaffter family in a statement said that law enforcement authorities and family are trying to establish the facts surrounding Dinesh's death and inquiries are ongoing. The family requested for respect of privacy and feelings, and await  accurate facts to  be established.

The statement said: “Dinesh was the very best of and the heart and soul of our family. He has made untold contributions to business and sports, passionately challenging injustices and supported countless worthy causes. He will be remembered foremost for his unending devotion to his family and friends and generosity even towards strangers.”

Dinesh leaves behind his wife Tarni and three children Ahalya, Aakash and Aadam as well as his parents Chandra and Lilani and siblings Prakash, Manjula and Ramesh and their families.

At the time of his demise Dinesh was the Managing Director of First Capital Holdings PLC, its subsidiaries and served as a Director of Janashakthi Limited. He has a background in finance and

substantial managerial experience and expertise of over 25 years, during which he has executed a range of transactions including M&A, restructuring and business valuations.

With professional qualifications in Management Accounting as an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (ACMA) UK, a Bachelor’s Degree in Laws (L.L.B.) and an Executive Master’s Degree in Business Administration (EMBA) from INSEAD, France.

He was formerly the Managing Director of Kelsey Developments PLC and Dunamis Capital PLC.
