The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have uncovered Rs. 140 million in cash and Rs. 7 billion in assets linked to groups that carried out the Easter Sunday attacks.

Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara, delivering his daily security update, said that a portion of the Rs. 140 million identified has been confiscated by the CID, while the balance remains in bank accounts.

“We will take steps to freeze these accounts. Assets worth more than Rs 7 billion belonging to these persons have been identified, and the CID is working to freeze these accounts,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, 73 suspects were arrested in connection with the terrorist attacks, out of which 54 are being questioned by the CID. Nineteen other suspects are under the custody of the Terrorist Investigations Department, Police Spokesman Gunasekara noted. Overall, 200 people were arrested since the attacks on 21 April.

Two people were also arrested in connection to the clashes that erupted in Negombo on Sunday. The Police are questioning the suspects, and will take steps to arrest more people responsible for the unrest in the coming days, Police said.

“This was clearly a situation that happened because people had consumed alcohol and then clashed. Investigations and search operations are continuing in the Poruthota, area but it is now peaceful.”

Police also said three shops had caught fire in Maharagama, but this was due to an electricity leak and was in no way connected to the Easter Sunday attacks. A letter threatening a Jaffna school was found to be a fabrication, following investigations.

Meanwhile, division troops of the Security Force Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) on a tip-off conducted a search operation in the Chundikulam Forest Reserve on Sunday evening, and recovered a large haul of Kerala Ganja, concealed in parcels.

Those parcels contained nearly 140.8 kg of Kerala Ganja, suspected to have been smuggled from India by drug dealers or peddlers. Army troops kept the STF and Palai Police informed of the detection, and handed over those detections to the Police, along with a person who behaved suspiciously inside the Forest Reserve.

The search was conducted on the instructions of the General Officer Commanding, 55 Division under the guidance of Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi, Commander, Security Forces - Jaffna.
