Ceylon Motor Traders’ Association (CMTA) yesterday protested opening up Government tenders for used cars, arguing that dealing with the manufacturer would result in the best prices.

CMTA, releasing a statement in response to calls for Government tenders to be opened for importers of used cars, called for the Government not to deviate from existing procurement procedures.

“We write to clarify that Government tenders are effectively sales agreements between the manufactures of motor vehicles and the Government of Sri Lanka. The local agent is often not a party to this contract.”

“The manufacturer nominates their local agent to act on their behalf and carry out pre-delivery inspections and give warranty support,” the statement said.

This procurement process is internationally accepted, the CMTA added.

“By the Government of Sri Lanka dealing with the manufacture, they are assured of not only the best price, but the most suitable vehicle for the conditions of the country of operation. Further, the vehicles are supported by manufacturers’ warranty,” the statement said.
