A Motion to increase the size of the two Parliamentary oversight committees, the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) and the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA), to 22 members will be presented to the House today.
The two Committees comprised 16 members in the previous Parliament.
Last week, Opposition members requested that the Chairmanship of the two Committees be given to members from their side.
The request was made when the Committee of Selection, which appoints members to all important Committees, met under the Chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
Both COPE and COPA were chaired by Opposition lawmakers in the last Parliament.
A Motion will also be presented to the House today on the composition of the Committee on Parliamentary Business, which will include the Speaker as its Chairman. The Deputy Speaker, the Deputy Chairperson of Committees, the Leader of the House, the Leader of the Opposition, Chief Government Whip, Chief Opposition Whip and 19 other Members are to be nominated by the Committee of Selection to serve in the First Session of the Ninth Parliament.
