Sri Lanka’s COVID-19 death toll exceeded 8,000 with 209 more deaths confirmed on Wednesday.
This is the highest number of COVID-19 deaths confirmed in a day. It is also the first time over 200 COVID-19 deaths were confirmed in a day.
The country’s COVID-19 death toll is 8,157, of which 1,000 deaths have been confirmed since 20 August, when the death toll crossed the 7,000 mark.
According to the Department of Government Information, 163 persons over the age of 60, and 46 persons aged 30 to 59 were among the deaths confirmed on Wednesday. The Epidemiology Unit states that 75.74% of the total fatalities are over the age of 60, 23.25% are between the ages 30 and 59, and 1.01% are below the age of 30.
The Department of Government Information adds that 108 fatalities confirmed on Wednesday are male and 101 fatalities are female. Of the total fatalities, 4,674 are male and 3,483 are female.
