COVID-19 death toll increases to 41

The number of COVID-19-related deaths in the island rose to 41, with five deaths classified as COVID-19-related yesterday.

The deaths include a resident of an elders’ home in Rajagiriya who was 51-years-old. He was admitted to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) on 7 November and died of COVID pneumonia.

A 45-year-old resident of Colombo-10 also passed away at the NHSL, having been admitted to hospital on 23 October. Health authorities determined the cause of death to be a respiratory tract infection caused by COVID-19.

A 63-year-old individual died of COVID pneumonia while she was receiving treatment at the Gampaha District Hospital. She was admitted on 9 November.

An autopsy of an unidentified man between the ages 55 and 60 revealed he had contracted the virus and COVID-19 is cited as the cause of death.

Health authorities also stated that an autopsy carried out at the Ragama Hospital on an individual who passed away at his place of residence revealed he was a COVID-19 infected person. The individual was 48-years-old and a resident of Ragama. He suffered from cancer for a lengthy period of time and his condition worsened due to COVID-19.

The number of COVID-19-related deaths has increased by 21 since the beginning of the month, with the Epidemiology Unit’s situation report published on 1 November recording 20 deaths. The situation report published on 4 October, when the first patient of the Divulapitiya COVID-19 cluster was identified, shows a death toll of only 13.
