Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT), in the Port of Colombo said yesterday it has marked a significant milestone with the arrival of the first batch of five automated CRMG cranes.

This development heralds a new era of enhanced productivity and operational efficiency for Sri Lanka’s busiest and most strategic maritime hub. These state-of-the-art cranes are not only set to transform the cargo handling capabilities of the port but also to further boost its global ranking among leading maritime destinations. Featuring cutting-edge automation, increased lifting capacities, and extended outreach, the double cantilever CRMGs can lift 41 MT under spreader, stacking containers 6 high (+1), have a span of 36.5 metres, and are 12 containers wide; and impressively can service traffic from both sides.

These cranes are a critical component of CWIT’s broader strategy to integrate modern technology into the Port of Colombo, positioning it as a competitive transshipment hub in South Asia.

“The arrival of these cranes marks a significant step forward in our journey to shape the future of global commerce. At CWIT, we are committed to “Leading the Way” by integrating cutting-edge technology and innovative practices that will drive efficiency and growth in the Port of Colombo, positioning us at the forefront of the global shipping industry,” said CWIT CEO Munish Kanwar.

CWIT’s first CRMG cranes are a clear signal of the Port of Colombo’s journey to becoming a leading maritime hub in South Asia. The modernisation efforts reflect a strategic vision to increase the port’s capacity, reduce costs, and improve service quality. As these cranes begin their operations, the positive ripple effects will be felt across by the port’s various stakeholders, from shipping lines and exporters to the local economy and workforce.

Colombo West International Terminal is poised to become one of the most advanced and strategically significant container terminals in the Indian Ocean region. As a key player in the global maritime industry, CWIT is designed to handle the world’s largest container vessels, offering state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology to enhance operational efficiency and capacity. The terminal represents a critical milestone in Colombo’s journey to solidify its position as a premier maritime hub, driving economic growth and facilitating international trade across Asia and beyond.
