The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the implementation of a new program formulated by the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Department of Commerce, together with the relevant officials of the Sri Lankan Embassies, to make tea a leading export industry.
The program is formulated to turn tea into a major source of foreign revenue for the country.
The proposal for the revival and modernisation of the tea industry was presented to the Cabinet by Minister of Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Ramesh Pathirana. The program is to help tea producers increase their production by at least 10% each year, starting from 202-.
The Cabinet proposal is also aimed at providing relief to those in the sector who have suffered many setbacks in the past few years, as well as encouraging those in the sector to improve productivity.
