Cabinet on Wednesday gave approval to establish a Green Industrial City on a 194-acre land belonging to the Land Reforms Commission named ‘Pethiyakanda Watta’. The land covers both the Attanagalla and Warakapola Divisional Secretariat areas.

Cabinet was informed that around 150 investors interested in starting businesses in the Western Province had submitted their applications. It was also pointed out that the eight industrial cities in the Western Province were inadequate to facilitate these applicants.

Priority will be given to the manufacture and assembly of electrical and electronic components, packaging materials, value-added agricultural products, rubber and plastic-based products, manufacture and assembly of apparel and related products, and pharmaceuticals and related products.

Accordingly, new Industrial Cities have been planned to cover both Gampaha and Kegalle Districts.

At present, 32 Industrial Cities are being operated throughout the country under the Ministry of Industry, and approximately Rs. 36,500 million has been invested in these Industrial Cities by private investors.

The Government has spent around Rs. 4,517 million for the infrastructure development of these Industrial Cities, and the number of job opportunities created is about 18,600. The joint Cabinet proposal was presented by the Minister of Lands S.M. Chandrasena and Minister of Industries Wimal Weerawansa.
