Marking a significant step in strengthening the country’s fight against bribery and corruption, the Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan 2025-2029. The five-year action plan will be implemented with the coordination of all Ministries, State Departments, institutions, and key stakeholders.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the new action plan aligns with the expanded role of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), which, under the Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2023, has moved beyond its traditional role of investigating and prosecuting corruption-related offences.
He said it will now also implement and regulate anti-corruption policies aimed at eliminating systemic corruption from all sectors of governance.
The move is also a part of the Government’s ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative, which intends to enhance moral integrity in society and ensure a transparent governance framework.
The plan also seeks to meet international anti-corruption obligations, particularly those outlined in the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).
Sri Lanka previously implemented its National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (2019-2023) in compliance with Section 5 of the UNCAC.
“The 2025-2029 plan has been formulated after reviewing the earlier strategy, incorporating input from domestic and international stakeholders,” Dr. Jayatissa said.
The proposal to this effect, submitted by President Anura Kumara Disanayake, was approved unanimously by the Cabinet of Ministers.
