In a move aimed at ensuring the financial viability and sustainability of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), the Cabinet of Ministers approved a revision of water and sewerage fees.

The decision is driven by the objective of expanding access to safe water and sanitation, improving service quality, and promoting the sustainable use of water resources.

The proposal to revise the charges was presented by the Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Minister Jeevan Thondaman, taking into account the pressing need to balance the financial aspects of water management with the welfare of citizens.

“Recognising the importance of minimising the impact on low-income groups, as well as considering the social security base provided in connection with educational, religious, and public water supplies, the Cabinet gave its nod to the proposed revisions,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

He emphasised that while addressing the financial aspects, the Government has also taken into account the needs of vulnerable groups and communities. “The revised charges will be structured in a way that minimises the burden on low-income individuals and families ensuring that access to water remains affordable for all segments of society,” he added.

Gunawardena also said the social security base provided for educational, religious, and public water supplies will be safeguarded, demonstrating the Government’s commitment to supporting essential services and institutions that benefit the public.

“This approach reflects a comprehensive understanding of the importance of water access for various aspects of community life,” he added.

With the revision of water and sewerage fees, the Government aims to strike a balance between financial sustainability and social welfare. “By ensuring that the NWSDB remains financially viable, the Government can secure the resources necessary for expanding access to safe water and sanitation services across the country. This move aligns with the Government’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation,” he noted.
