Cabinet in chorus for 10-perch State land in Battaramulla to Yohani

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the allotment of a 9.68 perch State-owned land to singing sensation Yohani de Silva in recognition of her talent which brought international fame to Sri Lanka. The proposal to this effect was

submitted by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as Cultural Affairs Minister.

“Various parties had proposed to the Prime Minister that a piece of land close to the capital of the country should be awarded to in recognition of her achievement,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

The land allotted to the singer is owned by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and adjoins the land leased to members of the 1996 World Cup winning cricket team on a 99-year lease basis, located at Robert Gunawardena Mawatha – Battaramulla.

Singer-songwriter and rapper Yohani rose to global fame with her cover version of ‘Menike Mage Hithe,’ which became an instant hit, and in the process won the hearts of millions of people around the world, such as Indian superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan and Tiger Shroff. The popular song has crossed 194 million views on YouTube as of yesterday and has been on the YouTube Global Music Index Top 10 for several days.

After winning millions of Indian hearts, the singer in October announced that she was all set to enter Bollywood with Ajay Devgn-starrer ‘Thank God,’ which is directed by Indra Kumar and produced by Bhushan Kumar. Yohani will sing the Hindi version of her hit song for the film, which also stars Sidharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet Singh. 

Yohani is also scheduled to perform on 3 January 2022 at the National Day event designated for Sri Lanka at Expo 2020 Dubai.
