Cabinet has granted approval to build a 300 MW power plant in Puttalam, Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardana said yesterday.

The Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity board (CEB) was authorised by Cabinet to enter into the necessary agreements to set up the plant, he said.

Gunawardena said that during the five years of Yahapalanaya rule, no investments were made in any major power plants, and the country could face a power crisis with no additions to the national gird.
