Cabinet nod to Gazette draft Bill to amend Constitutional clause on President’s term

The Cabinet of Ministers approved draft Bill to amend Constitutional clause on President’s term be published in the Gazette and submitted to Parliament for approval.

“The Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman has received clearance from the Attorney General,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.

On 9 July, the Cabinet approved amending paragraph (b) of Article 83 of the Constitution by substituting the clause “exceeding six years” with “exceeding five years” with regard to the tenure of the President.

Gunawardena assured that the move is not to delay the elections as claimed by the Opposition and various other groups.

The joint proposal submitted by President Ranil Wickramasinghe, Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reform Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
