Cabinet nod to appoint 25 Boards of Inquiry to fast-track investigations

The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday approved to appoint 25 Boards of Inquiry to expedite the investigation of complaints regarding missing and disappeared persons.

The Office on Missing Persons was established in accordance with the provisions of Act No. 14 of 2016. As per the Cabinet paper presented by Justice Minister Ali Sabry, regional offices established in Matara, Mannar, Jaffna, Batticaloa and Kilinochchi have received 14,988 complaints on missing persons.

The Boards of Inquiry have been appointed in order to probe the complaints, while allowing the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) to issue reports to relatives of missing persons after conducting formal investigations in accordance with the provisions of the Act.
