The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved a significant low-income housing project funded by a Chinese Government grant, which will see the construction of 1,996 housing units across the country.
The initiative is part of an ongoing effort to address Sri Lanka’s housing needs, specifically targeting low-income families and selected communities, including local artists.
“Bids have been solicited from eight Chinese contractors nominated by the Chinese Government, which will fully fund the project and oversee construction, with the Sri Lankan Government providing the necessary land,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Vijitha Herath said yesterday.
Addressing the post-Cabinet media briefing, he confirmed the construction of 575 units in Moratuwa and 108 units in Kottawa has been awarded to China Railway 25th Bureau Group Company Ltd.
“The housing units in Kottawa will be designated for low-income artists to fulfil the housing needs within this community,” he added.
China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC) will build 586 housing units in Dematagoda and 112 units in Maharagama, while Shanxi Construction Investment Group Co. has been assigned to construct 615 units in Peliyagoda.
