In a significant step towards strengthening legal frameworks for managing criminal assets, the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved publication of a gazette notification for the draft Bill on Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and its submission to Parliament for approval.
The move follows clearance received from the Attorney General for the Bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman. On 25 April 2024, the Cabinet approved the preparation of a draft Bill concerning property earned from crime. This approval follows the committee report on the development of policies, legal frameworks, and draft legal provisions related to such assets.
The legislation is part of the Government’s efforts to enhance governance as per the agreement with the IMF. The proposal to this effect presented by the President in his capacity as the Defence Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
