The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting this week cleared a water villa resort to be set up in three leased islets off Kalpitiya in the north western coast of the country.
Sun Resort Investment Lanka Ltd. had submitted a proposal to set up water villas on three islets already leased by the firm. The firm will set up 50 water villas on Wellei I, Wellei II and Wellei II islets.
In a bid to develop tourism in Kalpitiya and to promote the islets resort concept, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) has acquired 12 islets already.
The Government said countries such as the Maldives, Indonesia, Vietnam, Mauritius, Mexico, Cambodia, Fiji, Greece, France and Switzerland were operating water villas and bungalows successfully whilst attracting significant number of high-end international tourists.
Water villas and bungalows are constructed in an eco-friendly manner in the shallow waters around the islands and equipped with innovative and hip accommodation.
The Cabinet paper submitted by Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga in this regard was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
