The Cabinet of Ministers approved the transfer of the National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre, along with all its assets and functions, to the newly established Cinnamon Development Department.

The move is aimed at enhancing and streamlining research activities related to cinnamon under the purview of the Cinnamon Development Department.

Recognising the pivotal role played by the National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre, currently under the Department of Export Agriculture, the decision to transfer its responsibilities aligns with the vision of optimising research efforts in the field.

On 14 August 2023, the Cabinet had previously approved the establishment of the Cinnamon Development Department, which was set to come into effect on 1 September 2023.

This strategic realignment is anticipated to contribute to the focused development of the cinnamon industry, ensuring that research activities are consolidated within the ambit of the newly established department.

The approval granted on Wednesday follows a proposal presented by Plantation Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana.
