Central Bank issues Rs. 1,000 coin to mark 75 years of Independence

The Central Bank has issued an uncirculated commemorative coin in the denomination of Rs. 1,000 to mark the 75th Independence Day Celebration in the country.

The first coin was officially presented to President Ranil Wickremesinghe by Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe yesterday.

This is the 71st commemorative coin that was issued by the Central Bank. Its weight is 28.28 grams.

The obverse of the coin depicts the Number “75” in large numerals with the image of holding the Sri Lankan flag at the centre of the coin. 

Words “Independence Celebration” in English, Sinhala and Tamil appear along the periphery on the upper edge of the coin. The years “1948 – 2023” appear along the periphery on the bottom edge of the coin.

On the reverse, the coin depicts the face value “1000” in large numerals at the centre. Word “rupees” in  Sinhala, Tamil and English appear below the face value and the national emblem of Sri Lanka appears above the face value. The year “2023” is  at the bottom edge of the coin. Words “Sri Lanka”  in English, Sinhala, and Tamil appears along the  periphery on the upper edge of the coin

A limited number of coins are available for purchase from March 2023 and coins will be sold through the CBSL Sales Counters at the Economic History Museum, Central Point Building, No. 54, Chatham Street, Colombo 01, and CBSL Regional Offices in Anuradhapura, Matale, Matara, Trincomalee, Kilinochchi and Nuwara Eliya.

The public will be notified of the selling price of the coin and the date of availability for sale in due course. The coin will be issued in an attractive presentation box with a certificate of authenticity.
