The Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) in a statement yesterday extended its heartfelt gratitude to President Wickremesinghe for favourably considering one of its Budget proposals to appoint an expert committee to resolve construction issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic crisis. In a significant move to address the challenges faced by the construction industry, the President’s decision to prioritise the establishment of an expert committee demonstrates a proactive approach to mitigating the impact of the ongoing crisis on the sector. The construction industry, like many others, has been significantly affected by the pandemic and the economic downturn, leading to a range of complex challenges that require strategic interventions.

The CIOB applauded the commitment from the President, Construction Minister, secretaries, and the officials of the Ministry of Construction and the Finance and the CIDA officials for their understanding and addressing the specific needs of the construction industry during these unprecedented times.

“By recognising the importance of providing targeted support and solutions, the President has shown exemplary leadership in prioritising the welfare of the construction sector and its workforce,” CIOB added.

It said the appointment of an expert committee to address construction-related challenges will undoubtedly contribute to the industry’s resilience and recovery. It reflects a collaborative and forward-thinking approach that aligns with the Institute’s vision for a sustainable and thriving construction sector in Sri Lanka.

The CIOB said it looks forward to working closely with the appointed expert committee and the Government to contribute expertise and insights that will help navigate the industry through these challenging times. CIOB remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote the long-term growth and stability of the construction sector, and welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with all stakeholders in achieving these shared objectives.

CIOB extended its sincere appreciation to the President of Sri Lanka for his responsiveness to the needs of the construction industry and for taking proactive steps to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis.
