Independent MP Prof. Charitha Herath yesterday raised a point of order during the debate on the ouster of PUCSL Chairman.

He argued that since no existing standing order allows the debate removal of the PUCSL chair, the speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena should adhere to Standing Order 139. However, it was turned down by the speaker much to the dismay of knowledgeable MPs. Standing Order 139 specifies the Speaker shall have the power to regulate the conduct of Business in Parliament in any matter not provided for in these Standing Orders.
