Company related to brown sugar incident pays Rs. 160 m penalty to Treasury

State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya yesterday said that the company responsible for importing 607.5 tons of brown sugar to Sri Lanka in violation of the Customs Ordinance and the Import and Export Control Act has credited the relevant fine to the Treasury. 

He confirmed that Rs. 160 million has been credited to the Government coffers as the relevant fine.

An investigation was registered under Customs Case No. PCAD/2023/0001/CCR/0006 regarding the incident. According to its decision, the State Minister pointed out that the company has made arrangements to pay the relevant fine.

On 9 January, Sri Lanka Customs officials held up a large stock of brown sugar that was imported under the pretence that it was white sugar.
