First woman Rotary Global President Jennifer Jones called on all Sri Lanka corporates to be focused not only on profit or bottom lines but also in the triple bottom line metrics of social, environmental and financial results even though the country is experiencing its toughest economic climates in history.

Addressing top corporates at the Colombo Stock Exchange in the presence of senior officers of the Colombo Stock Exchange, Jones said: “Let’s begin with environmental sustainability and I commend the challenging One Million Tree project that Rotary Sri Lanka has embarked on which will benefit people, profit and planet too.”

Jennifer Jones rang the Opening Bell at the Stock Exchange in keeping with the tradition of market opening ceremonies to mark important events.

CSE Chairman Dilshan Wirasekera appealed to corporates to partner Rotary in this novel initiative and thereby ensure that the country could be protected from environmental disasters.

One Million Trees Trust Chair Gowri Rajan noted that the Rotary One Million Tree project was a unique program as trees are planted in a dedicated area in the Nuwara Eliya district and they are nurtured carefully by experts in the field and there is full transparency and accountability as figures are audited annually. Rajan also noted that everyone has a favourite tree in their life – we want to know your tree story she said.

Explaining Rotary Sri Lanka’s service, District Governor Pubudu De Soyza stated that in Sri Lanka, over a 200 billion rupees worth of projects have been implemented for the benefit of all communities.

Rotary has a seat in the UN General Assembly of the United Nations and it is the largest non-Government Foundation providing education and humanitarian aid.
