DCS announces key changes in macro-economic aggregates estimates

  • Revision made under new National Accounts base year of 2015

The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) Sri Lanka announced yesterday it has updated the existing National Accounts (NA) base year (2010) to the year of 2015 while improving the National Accounts Compilation System further and has published the estimated new National Accounts Estimates (NAE) for the period from 2015 to 2021.

Issuing a communiqué, on releasing rebase d National Accounts Estimates (base year 2015), DCS Director General P.M.P. Anura Kumara said that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Sri Lanka for the year of 2021 at current price has been reported as Rs. 17,685.9 billion under the new base year of 2015 and which had been reported as Rs. 16,809.3 billion under the old base year of 2010. Accordingly, the GDP at current price has been shifted by 5.2% positively. 

The reported GDP growth rate for the year of 2021 has been changed as 3.3% under the new rebase d GDP estimates and the GDP growth rate for the year 2021 had been published as 3.7% under the old base year of 2010. 

The estimated Per Capita Gross National Income for the year of 2021 under the old base year was $ 3,722 and now it has been increased up to $ 3,921.

Along with the updating of base year of GDP estimates, the values of some previously published macro-economic aggregates, such as GDP growth rates, Per capita income, Government debt as a percentage of GDP and Budget deficit as a percentage of GDP have been updated accordingly.
